though Courtney and Eli were well aware of Willie Nelson’s massive contribution to country music and culture as a whole, his legacy became ever more present when they moved to Austin. Nelson’s relocation from Nashville to Austin revived his career back in 1973 alongside a growing hippie music scene. He has been heralded as “Austin’s music catalyst” and is celebrated all over the “Music Capital of the World” with murals, statues, and even a street named after him–Willie Nelson Blvd.

Late one evening as Courtney was driving home from a gig, the song “On the road again” came on the radio. As we all have heard this song numerous times over the years, this time just hit her differently. The chord progression and lyrics gripped her heart in a much deeper and emotional way. After the distressing experience of the Covid Lockdowns as working musicians, the message of the song felt far more powerful than ever before.
Shortly thereafter, Courtney shared her thoughts on the song with Eli and proposed recording a cover of the song but with a stripped down, moody, and emotional sound. Of course, Eli wasted no time and quickly composed a hauntingly beautiful arrangement of this beloved tune. They both knew the song still needed another element to seal the deal…a cello. So, they teamed up with the extremely talented, Austin-based cellist, Ryle Harrod-Corral and performed a live studio recording at Cedar Creek Studios.
Gritty Sunset’s cover of “On The Road Again” is available on all streaming platforms. The duo is currently recording their original music and can’t wait to share it with all of you later this year! To see more videos, click HERE.
